Job Description Summary
Montgomery College, Rockville, has an immediate need for a part-time Network Engineer, S03732, in the Office of Information Technology. The work schedule will cover 20 hours per week covering primarily evening hours and must include a work period of at least 4 hours on at least one weekend day per week. The exact hours and days are based on needs of the unit. This position is non-bargaining, exempt, and grade 33.

Summary

The Office of Information Technology is seeking a network engineer to provide backup operator coverage in the Network Operations Center, presence in the Secondary Data Center on the Rockville campus, and network engineering support to the Network Engineering Team. The engineer may participate in off-hours network projects and operations management.Job Description
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve server and network related issues, devices, and hardware/software problems.
  • Measure volume and performance of network traffic; identify and make recommendations to improve network utilization and performance issues; recommend and implement strategies to improve network performance.
  • Perform requested changes to the network infrastructure as needed.
  • Install & configure layer 2 devices (VLANS, POE, IP addressing); integrate, test, implement, document, configure and install layer 2 & 3 devices, routers, switches and wireless access points.
  • Deploy network monitoring tools/services, and generate reports.
  • Configure, deploy, troubleshoot, and manage WAN/ISP and network connections to remote campuses.
  • Provide on-site support for the College's Rockville point-of-presence for campus network, server, and storage services.
  • On occasion, provide operator coverage on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus when regular operators are unavailable.
  • On occasion, provide support at any College site, including the three main campuses in Germantown, Rockville, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, and/or any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the field and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Three years of hands-on experience as a Network Engineer, demonstrating progressively responsible information technology experience including network installation/maintenance and preparing network documentation/configuration reports.
  • Experience configuring LAN infrastructure, including VLAN and Trunking.
  • Knowledge of IT industry, best practices, techniques and current/emerging trends, system security models and protocols, and Ethernet, IP, and OSPF.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic, testing, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Knowledge of standards for wiring, data closets, copper and fiber installation, cable testing and certification.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, identify and repair network problems.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, maintain confidentiality, multi-task, communicate effectively, follow written and verbal instructions, and work independently as well as with multiple teams.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CCNP/JNCIP or CCNA/JNCIA are preferred.
