Director of Finance/Controller

We are seeking a Director of Finance/Controller beginning early 2020. The Controller is the senior financial manager of the business office and is responsible for day-to-day operations ensuring adequate internal financial controls, accuracy, and timeliness of financial data. This position works closely with school administrators and has regular interaction with external parties such as board members, investment managers, and auditors.

Responsibilities and Duties

General Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Manage/oversee the school's general ledger, including the addition of new accounts and projects, change/inactivation of certain accounts, and reoganization of chart structure when appropriate.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reports, account reconciliations, and variance analyses to school budget managers, senior administration, and finance committee members.
  • Ensure the periodic bank, investment, and other balance sheet accounts are reconciled and reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Supervise cash receipts/cash management, accounts receivable/student billing, accounts payable, and general accounting operations.
  • Work with the Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations to plan, prepare and implement the school's annual budget.
  • Oversee student loan fund program.
  • Manage compliance reporting of financial information to federal, state, and county tax authorities.
  • Responsible for non-resident alien tax compliance reporting.
  • Support the Finance and Risk and Audit committees of the Board of Regents.


  • Responsible for the maintenance of endowment accounting, including compliance utilization of endowed funds.
  • Ensure accounting for split-interest agreements.
  • Ensure the school is meeting its debt covenants and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Investment Committee of the Board of Regents. Implement and confirm committee instructions with custodial bank.

Audit and Year-End
  • Responsible for scheduling and overseeing the year end closing of the general ledger and related reports.
  • Lead, manage, and coordinate the preparation of schedules, reconciliations, plant property and equipment, and work papers for the annual audit/review.
  • Prepare the audited financial statements, including footnote disclosures, following GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Prepare tax reporting package for auditors. Work closely with external auditors to coordinate and prepare annual Forms 990 and 990-T for filing with the IRS.

Management Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the assistant controller, accounts payable manager, and accounts receivable manager.
  • May perform as back up to any business office function.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of performance management for all direct reports, including effective onboarding, coaching and mentoring, and annual feedback for growth review.

Minimum Qualifications
  • BA or BS degree required in accounting. CPA and MBA preferred.
  • Ten years of progressive management and financial/accounting experience with five years' experience in not-for-profit or college/university financial reporting.
  • Experience with endowment accounting and reporting preferred.
  • Proficient with computerized accounting systems, Google suite, and MS suite applications.
