Job Description

Arc Publishing ( ) is an award-winning, state-of-the-art digital platform and suite of tools that's engineered to meet the demands of modern publishers and brands around the world. Built by The Washington Post, Arc technology handles complex publishing and audience needs across video, web, apps, subscriptions and ad monetization, providing a competitive advantage enhanced by a set of sophisticated machine learning and AI-powered tools. Arc has powered the digital transformation of clients both large and small across the globe. At its core, Arc is about speed and innovation: for readers, newsrooms, brands, advertisers and developers.

It's been said that The Washington Post is a 141 year-old start-up. Since Jeff Bezos bought the company in 2013, we've emerged as not only a world-class publisher, but as a leading technology company too. We're building the future of publishing technology. It's part of why Fast Company named us the 8th "most innovative company" in the world beating out brands like Instagram and Spotify

As an increasing number of large digital publishers move their critical business processes to Arc Publishing, we are in need of high-powered technical product talent to own the development of our technical products - core APIs, publishing systems and front-end development platforms - as well as to guide the development of our platform's user-facing features from a technical perspective.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated technical product expertise, and ideally background in computer science / computer engineering. You have worked extensively in the enterprise SaaS world, and know what it takes to build a great platform that an enterprise development community is excited to build on top of. You know how to work with business people, engineers, and other product professionals to create a world-class vision, translate it into a scalable architecture and client-friendly developer interface. Other product managers will also look to you for assistance in designing the more technical aspects of their own products, and ensuring that the technical design meets the product and business needs of the feature set.

In order to be successful in this role, you must possess customer-facing skills that allow you to represent Arc well within a customer's environment and drive discussions with senior engineering leadership to explain both the technical vision of Arc, as well as what the client will need to do from a resourcing and technical perspective to be successful on our platform. You should also have a demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges as you help our customers take advantage of the efficiencies, cost savings and quick innovation available only in a cloud-hosted CMS such as Arc. In this role, you will use client feedback to drive platform and feature improvement, while also looking to the overall business goals of Arc to drive a long-term, strategic roadmap for our editorial technical products.

The TPM will work closely with Technical Account Managers, Solutions Architects and the Professional Services team to help advise customers on the most successful way to build atop and extend the Arc platform, as well as to drive adoption of new features and to ease the transition during necessary breaking changes. You will work with other Product Managers to assist in the technical aspects of their product development. You will work extensively with Engineering Leads and individual engineers to collaborate on technical vision and needs, and drive development of the world's leading enterprise digital publishing suite.

Critical Functions:
  • Build and maintain a strategic roadmap for the technical APIs underpinning our digital publishing solutions
  • Assist other product managers in ensuring that the technical design of their roadmap features meets the desired product outcome, both short-term and long-term
  • Lead workshops with customers to understand their key business challenges, and introduce roadmap features to solve key issues faced by existing or potential customers
  • Develop user stories, lead sprint planning, and other agile disciplines to help your team iteratively deliver great software
  • Use your strong innovative skills to design exciting features that customers will love
  • Learn from some of the brightest minds in the business - they would love to also learn from you!
  • Write sample code, user and API documentation and product announcements to articulate best practices and lead customers by example
  • Coordinate cross-team standards for the developer product experience, including API design, naming conventions and recommended usage paradigms
  • Maintain awareness of a broad set of competing solutions in the CMS business and open-source space and look for superior technical approaches and ideas
  • Brainstorm and explain technical approaches with clients to help them better understand and best utilize products and solutions
  • Extract data and metrics from Splunk, Elasticsearch, Datadog, Google Analytics or other data sources to understand users' usage patterns and success rates

  • 5+ years of experience managing a digital product, preferably in the e-commerce or enterprise B2B software space, with an emphasis on delivering quality experiences in a rapid, iterative fashion
  • 2+ years of experience as a full-stack web developer, including writing templates or components that require data from a public API. Formal CS/CE background a plus.
  • 5+ years' experience interacting directly with customers and translating their needs into user stories that an engineering team can develop against.
  • Deep understanding of SEO best practices and content strategy
  • Proven ability to write detailed product requirements, success metrics, and test cases, manage existing products and evolve/optimize their performance using metrics and data (especially Google Analytics)
  • Familiarity with Elasticsearch, Solr, and/or Lucene
  • Experience with REST or GraphQL API design
  • Experience with API Documentation tools (OpenAPI, Swagger, API Blueprint, JSON Schema, etc.)
  • Experience with React, Angular or another front-end framework
  • Experience building against a software-as-a-service platform, such as AWS or Salesforce
  • Strong attention to detail-meticulous and accurate
  • Experience maintaining a product backlog and roadmap
