Job Description

WP BrandStudio - the branded content arm of The Washington Post - is experiencing exponential growth and we're seeking a highly analytical and creative Senior Interaction Designer to join our design team. Our team consists of talented designers and creative strategists who push boundaries to develop innovative solutions for advertising partners. We operate similar to a creative agency to produce next-generation products through a journalistic lens.

Reporting to the Creative Design Manager of WP BrandStudio, the ideal candidate should have a strong background in visual/interaction design, UX/UI, and HTML/CSS. Key to this role is having stellar collaboration and communication skills, a strong and systematic work ethic, positive attitude, and a willingness to learn while evolving his/her skill set. While the responsibilities for this role will largely consist of design tasks related to client projects, there will also be a need for this individual to work closely with our operations and engineering teams to determine appropriate department workflows and documentation for our CMS and back-end solutions. This may also involve communications with the newsroom graphics team to identify best practices for existing modules, as well as new opportunities for innovative modules within our custom templates. Front-end development experience is a huge plus.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead design projects from concept through final product
  • Brainstorm and contribute creative ideas for pre-sale pitches
  • Work with Program Management team to fully understand timeline, budget and feasibility of each assigned project to determine optimal production process
  • Research client brands as well as The Washington Post reader behavior to create customized content experiences
  • Work with Performance Team to understand client KPIs and content performance backed by data to inform design decisions
  • Design intuitive user interface across platform and device
  • Collaborate on multimedia concepts and executions with strategists, editors, writers, producers, program managers, performance managers, social media managers and developers
  • Apply design process and principles daily to each project with full ownership
  • Collaborate with developers to implement design/visual consistency across program elements and future products
  • Work with BrandStudio developers, site engineering and the newsroom graphics teams to update site templates and modules
  • Stay up to speed on innovations in branded content, digital storytelling and interactive design
  • Assist with providing art direction, client handling and project leadership where needed


Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of digital and interactive design experience
  • BFA/MFA or BA/MA in Communication Design, Graphic Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Multimedia Design or professional experience is strongly preferred
  • Must have portfolio demonstrating strong UX/UI, visual, interaction design skills/principles
  • Expert experience with Adobe CC Suite (particularly PS, AI, ID, AE)
  • Proficiency with prototyping tools, such as InVision, Adobe XD, Sketch, etc.
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience using HTML/CSS (JavaScript is a plus)
  • Mastery of responsive design with a strong emphasis on mobile-first design practices
  • Experience conducting user research and testing
  • Experience providing art/creative direction, client communication and leading projects
  • Ability to take initiative, adapt quickly to changing priorities and work with a high sense of urgency
  • Strong problem solving and technical troubleshooting skills
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both written and verbal


Bonus Points:
  • Previous management experience of a design team
  • Experience with product design and creating design systems
  • Experience working with new technologies, like augmented reality, virtual reality, experiential, etc.
  • Experience creating branded content
  • Creative/Advertising Agency or newsroom design experience
