WP BrandStudio - the branded content arm of The Washington Post - is experiencing exponential growth and we're seeking a highly conceptual Visual/Interaction Designer to join our design team. Our team consists of talented designers and creative strategists who push boundaries to develop innovative solutions for advertising partners. We operate similar to a creative agency to produce next-generation products through a journalistic lens.

Reporting to the Creative Design Managers of WP BrandStudio, the ideal candidate should have a strong background in visual/interaction design, UX/UI, and typography. Key to this role is having stellar collaboration and communication skills, a strong and systematic work ethic, positive attitude, and a willingness to learn while evolving his/her skill set. She/he should have an interest in digital storytelling tools like: social-first experiences, data visualizations, animation & video, photography, interactive elements, AR, VR, etc. Front-end development skill is a huge plus.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead projects from concept through final product
  • Brainstorm and contribute creative ideas for pre-sale pitches
  • Fully understand timeline, budget and feasibility of each project to determine optimal production process
  • Research client brands as well as The Washington Post reader behavior to create customized content experiences
  • Understand client KPIs and performance backed by data to inform design decisions
  • Design intuitive user interface across platform and device
  • Collaborate on multimedia concepts and executions with strategists, editors, writers, producers, program managers
  • Apply design process and principles daily to each project with full ownership
  • Collaborate with engineering team to implement design/visual consistency across program elements and future products
  • Be up to speed on innovations in branded content, digital storytelling and interactive design


Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of digital and interactive design experience
  • Must have portfolio demonstrating strong UX/UI, visual, interaction design skills/principles
  • Expert experience with Adobe CC Suite (particularly PS, AI, AE, PR, ID)
  • Proficiency with prototyping tools, such as InVision
  • Mastery of responsive design with a strong emphasis on mobile-first design practices
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience using HTML/5 & CSS/3
  • Expert-level typography skills with an eye for detail
  • Ability to work well in teams
  • Strong problem solving and technical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to take initiative, adapt quickly to changing priorities and work with a high sense of urgency
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both written and verbal
  • BFA/MFA or BA/MA in Communication Design, Graphic Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Interactive or Multimedia Design or professional experience is strongly preferred

  • Video editing & motion graphics expertise
  • Experience with new technologies (AR, Mixed Reality)
  • Experience creating branded content
  • Creative/Advertising Agency or newsroom design experience
  • Presentation skills
