Job Description

As a key leader of the Commercial Operations team at The Washington Post, the Head of Global Commercial Data Strategy, Partnerships and Governance role requires in-depth experience with a variety of measurement and research methods, forecasting techniques, reporting and analytic platforms, strategic planning, project management, data sourcing and evaluation, financial analysis, and includes management responsibility.

As the Head of Global Commercial Data Strategy, Partnerships and Governance, you and your team support The Washington Post's Commercial, Programmatic and Client Solutions teams by driving insights that help stakeholders better understand business trends. Your team leverages reporting tools and ad hoc analysis to pull out relevant data, provide trend reporting, develops KPI frameworks to better understand holistic performance, and performs deep ad hoc analysis and "what if" scenario building to better inform decisions.

  • Lead strategy and compliance for The Washington Post's audience and client's data in campaigns, media activations and research.
  • Develop a robust operating model and governance process for the collection and strategic usage of The Washington Post's data assets & capabilities in service of the needs of our brand and agency partners.
  • Collaborate with executive & legal teams to create a streamlined yet comprehensive process for creating, deploying, and managing our global audience data governance policies and processes to comply with localized privacy regulations.
  • Understand what questions commercial analytics can answer, how those insights fit into our business processes and who needs access to them. Develop a commercial analytics platform that will deliver the right insights to the right people in the way that works best for them.
  • Partner with the Commercial Engineering team to develop a clear strategy on how to procure the right kind of data, how to integrate it into our data foundation with the right integrity and quality, and how to manage the data on an ongoing basis in a way that maximizes value.
  • Research and develop innovative new business models and growth opportunities with partners; negotiate, structure, and execute relevant agreements.
  • Work cross-functionally to evaluate new data sources, and subsequently onboard data based on an agreed governance framework.
  • Work with the centralized research & analytics team to manage all vendor and client partnerships, globally, that relate to 1p, 2p and 3p data.
  • Partner with sales leadership and Commercial Operation teams to develop a set of global metrics and dashboards for the entire commercial funnel including sales coverage, customer penetration, sales process effectiveness, sales rep effectiveness, marketing, and campaign effectiveness to create a 360 view of the customer for the commercial organization.
  • Work across multiple functions (HR, field leadership, IT, Marketing, Finance, etc.) to develop a consistent, global approach to commercial analytics.
  • Lead data-sharing initiatives with sales, legal and our commercial group for deeper client integrations.
  • Lead the exploration and understanding of new measurement and analysis methodologies.
  • Develop internal POVs on subjects of data, cookies, and related products.
  • Represent The Washington Post across industry trade groups, specifically on the topics of identity solutions & privacy.
  • Assist with high profile brand and holding company initiatives relating to specific client data acquisition requirements.
  • Find and understand new and emerging technologies; bring new ideas and perspectives back into the client solutions business.

  • Bachelor's degree required; MA/MS/MBA or other advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience leading commercial analytics & data strategy teams. Experience in the sciences or tech industries preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills with expertise in the tools of secondary data analysis and forecasting
  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships at all levels within the organization
  • Ability to manage multiple non-connected projects and prioritize time/activities
  • Knowledge of various sales strategies, as well as broad base business acumen
  • Ability to build business cases, gain internal/external support, and drive implementation
  • Significant track record of successfully leading a team and coaching direct reports
  • Ability to set organizational resources to best achieve success on a variety of projects while properly managing time
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required (up to 25%)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, & especially, PowerPoint
