Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This is a working Managerial position under the general supervision of the Center Director. The person in this position will be responsible for the management and coordination of internal and external research and projects at two facilities as follows: 1) Central Maryland Research & Education Center – Clarksville Facility a 925 acre research facility that consists of a dairy unit, equine unit and crops unit (includes agronomic, horticultural and organic research). The position will work with researchers, Dairy Program Manager and Agronomy Manager to facilitate projects at the facility in the areas of crops and cropping systems, nutrition, reproductions, physiology herd health, animal behavior and the effects of herd management practices upon overall farm nutrient management. 2) Western Maryland Research and Education Center (WMREC)-Keedysville MD a 500 Acre Research Facility that consists of agronomy and horticultural units. This position will work with researchers to provide support as outlined by Faculty/Scientists or their staff to implement projects using crop management and experimental design skills. Organizing, mapping and coordinating agronomic plots, both research and production at the facility.
Responsibilities:
• Primary goal of this position is to provide oversight and supervision of various activities to support UMD-College of Agriculture & Natural Resources Faculty, Staff and other Principal Investigators in research and extension activities while managing and coordination internal and external research by providing staff assistance, technical assistance, etc., to faculty/scientists. Conducting collaborative or independent extramural funded applied research.
• The Manager is responsible for the daily operations and planning of both Clarksville and Western Maryland Facilities program areas in coordination with the Dairy Program Manager (CMC), Agronomy Program Manager (CMC) and Two Ag Tech Supervisor staff positions at WMREC. Oversees work of those supervised. Determining work priorities regarding schedules, projects, and assignments. Evaluating and completion of PRD’s for direct supports.
• Performs other activities such as coordination of Maryland State Fair and animal control at Clarksville and Western Maryland Research Centers. Oversight of facility assigned farm equipment and animal inventory.
• Coordinate the assignment and use of farm resources: land, building, equipment, supplies and labor – for efficient and effective operations. Review facility budgets for expenditures to meet the needs of the facilities; while ensuring that purchases of supplies,
equipment and services are made in a timely and cost effective manner to keep the facility at maximum efficiency. • Provides oversight of research and technical programs in a research setting including quality assurance and safety programs. Keeping facilities and employees up-to-date on safety procedures and regulations pertinent to daily operations and for maintaining interactions with related organizations (OSHA, MOSHA, and MDA).
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (Plant Science, Dairy/Animal Science or agricultural related field)
• Maryland Public Agency Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate (can obtain within 19 months of employment)
• Nutrient Management Certificate (NMC)
• CDL (obtain within one year)
• Six (6) years’ experience with agricultural work with four (4) years in field research and/or animal husbandry (preferably dairy cattle) and two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
Additional Minimum Qualifications:
• Familiarity with animal husbandry and a variety of research field concepts, practices and procedures is preferred.
• Must be able to communicate effectively between faculty/scientists and technical staff ensuring that experiments adhere to research protocols.
• Understand and follow procedures and guidelines for safe operation in application and disposal of pesticides (i.e. OSHA, MOSHA, and MDA regulations) is required.
• Knowledge and understanding in correct operation and safety procedures for operating farm trucks in transporting fertilizer and pesticides over the road, large and small farm equipment and other equipment.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Harsh work environment – excessive heat, cold, dirt, noise. Must be able to tolerate strenuous physical activity (e.g. lifting, shoveling, and carrying heavy items) that may have to be completed in adverse weather conditions. Split shift hours is required and essential to operations.
