Reporting to the Vice President of Clinical Operations, and a member of the Clinical Research Associate Service Group, the Head of Monitoring supports Emmes' mission of shedding light on important human health problems through scientific partnerships that result in innovative solutions. This is accomplished by ensuring that Emmes provides the highest possible quality and efficiency of focused monitoring to Emmes' projects and its corresponding sponsors that creates value to the project.

  • Communicates corporate goals to the CRA group and modeling corporate culture through vision, action, and learning
  • Provides direct supervision of CRA Associate Directors responsible for resource management, training, quality of service to Projects, and supervising the career paths of CRA staff
  • Holds direct reports along with staff accountable for high performance while promoting engagement and fostering a value-based culture of accountability
  • Ensures frequent, clear, and open communication that fosters and maintains transparent, effective, and collaborative relationships within the CRA Service Group, with other Service Group Directors across the organization, and with Project Leaders to ensure quality delivery of services
  • Communicates effectively with CRA Associate Directors/Managers acting with sound judgment, maturity and confidence
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of SOPs, ensuring they accurately reflect the standards of activities falling under the responsibilities of CRA Service Group
  • Promotes quality standards of monitoring and improvement of member performance
  • Responsible for ensuring CAPA resolution for all data management activities in a timely fashion and communicating proactively with QA representatives regarding ongoing resolution activities
  • Identifies best practices for in-house and site monitoring; establishes internal and external training standards and manages the training budget
  • Ensures clinical operations in-house and site monitoring job descriptions and career paths are created, maintained, and communicated to the CRA members through the Managers
  • Maintains high group engagement metrics (through Gallup and other means) across clinical operations for in-house and site monitors
  • Identifies and tracks CRA Objectives and Key Results
  • Ensures timely and comprehensive performance evaluations with direct reports, and for all staff within the CRA group in conjunction with CRA Associate Directors/Managers
  • Enhances Project Leader relationships and quality services delivery
  • Provides consistency of project teams in collaboration with Project Leader and career development needs
  • Ensures internal and external CRA identification and Project assignments meets project needs for current and future work, in collaboration with Emmes infrastructure staff and in conjunction with CRA Associate Directors/Managers
  • Provides the support required to the Proposal and Pricing Department to appropriately resource and price new business opportunities for tasks within the CRA purview

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or related field required; Master's degree preferred
  • 10 or greater years of progressive experience in clinical research at a managerial level directing the work of others plus bachelor's degree; alternately 8 years progressive experience in clinical research and a master's degree considered
  • Director level expertise required including history of providing strategic oversight of vision and execution for a large, complex team of CRAs
  • Proven history of leading and building effective teams across broad groups or functions within the organization; demonstrated team player with a work history of interacting with others respectfully and cordially
  • Professional maturity and wisdom to work through challenges in an expedient manner and push through issues to reach mutual outcomes across teams
  • Demonstrated strong problem solving and analytical skills, combined with sound business judgment
  • Proven ability to effectively collect, analyze, and provide metrics to ensure delivery of services that exceed customer expectations across defined groups or functions within the organization
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to establish credibility with employees and business partners, along with an ability to build consensus and achieve goals through influence versus direct line authority
  • Knowledge of directing recruitment, hiring, supervision, coaching and evaluation of staff required
  • Ability to work proactively and effectively, with creative problem-solving skills
  • History of working on business development proposals, bid defenses, and inputs for CRA personnel sections highly desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel between intercompany offices up to 10% required
