Principal Solutions Architect

Job Description

Zeus is a fast-growing component of the Washington Post that is helping publishers optimize their digital advertising and level the playing field as they compete for ad dollars with digital native social and search giants, using the same technology and strategy as the Washington Post.

The Solutions Engineer plays a crucial role in implementing the Zeus technology on publisher sites by becoming deeply familiar with the customer's unique technical and product requirements and combining that with their expertise on the overall digital advertising ecosystem and Zeus technology. You'll be responsible for advising customers and internal teams to ensure successful Zeus implementations, creating reusable documentation on our approaches as well as providing input about customers and the ad tech industry to our engineering and product teams.

Zeus is a new business that is growing quickly, so you must be able to manage individual customer relationships in addition to building processes and procedures and guiding direct reports to help our organization scale.

While not a developer role, understanding of core engineering concepts and processes, especially as they relate to the publisher-advertiser ecosystem is critical as you'll be expected to deeply engage with customer and Zeus engineering teams on optimal integration patterns and synthesize customer needs and feedback into potential technical requirements.

Motivation
  • You have worked with external customers before and love translating their needs into actions for your internal team to take.
  • You are experienced in documenting solutions from both a business and technology standpoint.
  • You enjoy framing recommendations and helping external customers think through trade-offs and come to a decision.
  • You love to learn about new tools and systems, and become an expert in them
  • You are experienced in learning to communicate with engineering teams and customers about the broad concepts of the technology they implement.
  • You have hands-on experience with Google Ad Manager or other ad serving technology and strong knowledge of publisher business models.
  • You understand core web development technologies like JavaScript.
  • You are skilled at communicating complex ideas to both technically knowledgeable and product-oriented audiences
  • You want to collaborate with a talented and supportive team focused on improving advertising for all publishers.

Responsibilities
  • Work across multiple customer implementation projects to understand the details of the current state business and technology approach of the customer's advertising business, in addition to their goals for the Zeus implementation.
  • Become an expert in the Zeus product and technology and how it fits into the overall ad tech architecture, including how it typically interacts with the customer's CMS, Google Ad Manager and other ad tech partners.
  • Become an expert in the Zeus product and what it promises as business results and how it delivers on those promises.
  • Develop recommendations for customers that take into account the technology being used, the product boundaries/roadmap of Zeus and the desired client outcomes. Clearly communicate trade-offs between technology scope, business decisions and business results.
  • Collaborate with Zeus engineering, product and strategy teams to ensure our customer recommendations balance the needs and outcomes across those areas.
  • Work with the Zeus product team to address common implementation challenges in the product, our vendor partnerships, or both.
  • Document and publish implementation approaches for common scenarios that can be shared with future customer teams.
  • Create whitepaper style documentation that can be published to our customers to document our unique POV, recommendations and approaches with respect to Zeus and to the broader digital advertising landscape.
  • Build expertise in the ad technology and ad operations spaces in order to be able to better advise customers and coordinate across Zeus teams. Maintain a current understanding of the publisher revenue management landscape including business, technical and regulatory changes.
  • Work closely with Zeus Customer Integrations and Technical Account Management teams to ensure timelines and success metrics are aligned to recommendations. Follow through as implementations proceed to ensure recommendations are working as expected.
  • Participate in preparing and delivering material for business reviews with customers and partners.
  • Play an active role in mitigating impediments impacting successful implementation of Zeus technology on the publisher site.
  • Represent Zeus in early stage discussions with potential customers and technology partners.
  • Develop processes and capacity models to scale the Solutions Engineering over time as the business grows.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum experience 8-10 years in B2B software or publishing product development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience creating whitepapers documenting technical direction and business point of view
  • Experience in consulting roles advising internal or external teams on aspects of their business and technology architecture
  • Proven ability interacting with customers and all organizational levels
  • Experience in publishing and/or digital advertising technology with a focus on Ad Ops and engineering
  • Strong organizational, creative problem-solving, and collaborative skills
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic group environment and under deadline pressures
  • May require up to 25% travel
