DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UCDC is a system-wide program that provides University of California undergraduates with the opportunity to intern and study in Washington, DC. Students intern with the federal government, advocacy and non-profit organizations, the media, and the arts for a quarter or semester. Courses supplement students' internship experiences and take advantage of the many unique opportunities available in our nation's capital. All UCDC participants are required to live in the Center and approximately 270 students live in the building at any one time.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is part of a small team of IT professionals serving the needs of the University of California, Washington Center, an 11 story mixed use facility in Washington DC. The building provides housing for University students and faculty and houses the offices and programs of the Washington Academic Center, the Office of Federal Governmental Relations (FGR) as well as University MRUs. The Washington Center employs a variety of leading edge technologies and techniques to fulfill its academic mission and is expected to be a point of innovation for the development of academic technology. Reporting to the UCDC Chief Technology Officer; the Senior Desktop Support Specialist will be responsible for ongoing maintenance and future planning needs of the desktop environment. Evaluate applications and software patches for desktop applications to solve desktop issues. Monitor the performance of desktop infrastructure and make suggestions for improving efficiency. Collaborate with existing vendors to evaluate the new technology that is available and make recommendations to the Chief Technology Officer on using that technology. This is a hands on position that requires the incumbent to identify problems in the Center's network infrastructure and propose solutions. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced desktop systems professional with a full understanding of industry best practices and Campus or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Evaluates new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost/benefit analyses.

The System Administrator must have excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to adjust their communication strategies to their audience including staff, faculty, students, and experienced IT professionals. Professional development opportunities are available, and the System Administrator is expected to stay up to date on new software and beneficial technologies that could help streamline our systems. With an eye for detail, this person will ensure system errors and potential security risks are caught before they become an issue. An innovative mindset that motivates the development of unique ideas and complex problem solving is necessary.

Responsibilities

Workstation Management

• Maintain inventory of all workstations

• Utilizing tools such as Sophos, Tenable, and Intune monitor health of all workstations, and remediate issues as necessary in a timely manner.

• Maintain Windows Deployment Services Image and update as necessary.

Sophos Antivirus

• Cloud-based service with local agents.

• Live anti-malware protection with automated removal.

• Ransomware file protection.

• Exploit Prevention.

• Automatically isolates a computer for high severity conditions.

• Check for alerts regularly and resolve ASAP.

Vulnerability management (Tenable.io)

• Cloud-based service with local agents.

• Vulnerability management platform manually scans servers, workstations, and network equipment.

• Servers are scanned weekly on Saturday; Network devices are scanned weekly on Sunday; Workstations are scanned twice a week on Monday and Thursday.

• Most scanning is done by the cloud service; however, we have a local scanner installed on SCANMAN to scan our network equipment.

• Regularly reference workstation vulnerability scans and resolve all vulnerabilities.

Microsoft Intune

• Cloud-based service.

• Since we have migrated from a traditional on-site domain to Azure Active Directory, Microsoft Intune is utilized for configuration management instead of group policy.

• We currently utilize Microsoft Intune to manage Windows configuration settings, install applications, and run scripts on workstations.

• Windows 10 or above is required to join a device to Azure AD. (Server editions of Windows cannot join Azure AD currently)

SharePoint Online

• Maintain SharePoint online and the point of contact for any issues or requests relating to SharePoint online.

Guest Room TVs/Dish Network

• Provide support for the guest rooms that include a television and Dish Network service.

• Ensure Dish remotes are programmed correctly to operate the television.

• Maintain an up-to-date instruction sheet for operating the TV with Dish Network in each room.

General Support Provide support to staff, faculty, students, guests, tenants and events IT/AV needs. Support classroom needs.

Collaborate with IT Services Colleagues Collaborate with UCDC Chief Technology Officer to assess near- and long-term desktop and Audio/Visual needs. Work on any improvements, modifications, or replacement of desktop components, as directed.

Interact with Vendors Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve desktop hardware and software issues.

Project Coordination & Documentation Maintain documentation as it relates to desktop and Audio/Visual configuration, processes and service records.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.

• In-depth experience with Windows 7 &10, Vmware diagnostic and performance management tools and software.

• Thorough and broad knowledge and experience working with desktop management systems.

• Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.

• Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

• Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of DNS/DHCP function at a basic level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.

• Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.

• Demonstrated diverse problem-solving skills.

Education

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Incumbent will work in support of academic operation which runs 8:00AM - 5:00PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Incumbent may also work occasional after hours and/or on weekends.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: The recommended salary range is $97,000 - 107,000 commensurate with experience.
