VP of Commercial Group

Job Description

The Commercial Group sits at the intersection of technology, advertising and SaaS. The VP of Commercial will be charged with leading teams across The Washington Post with a focus on innovation and monetization. More specifically teams that own software as a service (Zeus Technology), emerging technology (data science and ML), advertising product (RED & Programmatic) and product marketing. This role joint reports to the CRO and the CIO.

  • The VP of Commercial will set the vision for building innovative and sustainable products that drive revenue for The Washington Post and its businesses
  • Own and manage the P&L of The Washington Post's newest commercial business, Zeus Technology
  • Drive development across all of The Post's commercial businesses including The Washington Post's RED team, Zeus Technologies and have a vision for new marketplaces where our commercial group should chart a path for monetization.
  • Set priorities for commercial product & engineering teams that support the needs of our customers
  • Drive and support the sales and marketing efforts of Zeus Performance, Zeus Prime and supporting WaPo revenue products
  • Be a student of the industry and deeply understand the media and marketing landscape to set a forward thinking agenda for WaPo products
  • Represent The Washington Post & our Commercial group in the press and at industry events

  • Managing a P&L
  • Managed a large team across various disciplines
  • Have incubated, built and deployed monetization products
  • Detail oriented and comfortable working directly with an engineering team on product development
  • Excited to work with customers to understand requirements and drive feature roadmaps
  • Marketing new technologies and commercial products internally and in-market
  • Deep understanding of the media and advertising ecosystem at large (industry-level)
  • Has unique POVs on where the media and advertising market is going and how to lead in monetizing and building business

  • Superior writing and public speaking skills
  • Can communicate up, down and horizontally within an organization
  • Can clearly articulate and formulate products, purpose and how to bring value to market
  • Have worked in or around technology SaaS businesses and understands business structures and strategies of SaaS
  • Has a knack for selling, and comfortable pitching products internally and in-market with goal of converting customers
  • A player coach: able to roll up your sleeves and do the job but also mentor and grow teams across various principles
  • Able to identify partners in market and be the decision maker for what to build vs. buy in growing product lines
  • A desire for building relationships internally and externally and working with various partners in order to take ideas through execution
  • Able to roll up sleeves and get into the details of product development
