Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Front End Software Engineer for our Research, Experimentation and Development technology (RED) team. In this role, you will create new revenue-driving applications and products for the Washington Post's commercial advertising division. This critical role will be a part of a team that is creating new, innovative marketing and advertising products, and systems to change the way publishers make money. The RED team is deeply interested in changing the fundamentals of advertising technology by building performant and competitive tools and products.

Responsibilities:
  • Development of front-end web applications using React
  • Create clean, modern, testable and well-documented code
  • Collaborate with team members including other engineers, designers and product managers to design and build highly-scalable applications and products for The Washington Post, advertisers and other publishers
  • Contribute to existing platforms that have a critical role in the digital landscape that supports washingtonpost.com.
  • Eagerness to explore and learn new software languages, tools and applications.
  • Work with a wide variety of engineering teams, design, product and newsroom stakeholders in the support and building of newsroom and public facing tools and applications.
  • Active participation on a scrum team including story grooming, planning work backlog, work estimation, sprint planning, retros, demos, etc.

Requirements:
  • 3+ years experience in software development
  • Experience with JavaScript, React, HTML5, CSS3, MongoDB, Express and Node.js
  • Experience building applications with React using recent features like Hooks and Context.
  • Experience building fast and efficient web applications with attention to design details
  • Experience with common front-end development tools such as Babel, Webpack, NPM, etc
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture
  • Capable of digging in and understanding legacy code. Ability to inspect code bases and find opportunities to simplify and optimize solutions.
  • Experiencing writing automated tests using frameworks such as Jest and Nightwatch
  • Experience with Git.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, equivalent field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building and deploying containerized web applications on AWS.
  • Experience working with other server side languages such as Node and Python
  • Experience working in Advertising Technology
