Here’s Why Your Job Search Should Focus on Remote Positions

Exploring the Top Work-From-Home Benefits

Working from home used to be almost unheard of, but these days it is no longer an inaccessible option for people. Though there will always be certain positions that are incompatible with a work-from-home setup, changing mindsets and increased creativity means there are more remote working positions than ever before.

Research from Global Workplace Analytics estimates that 56 percent of the U.S. workforce holds a job that’s compatible with remote work (at least partially). By the end of 2021, they believe as much as 30 percent of the entire workforce will be working from home multiple days per week.

We’ve always known that employees want the opportunity to work remotely, but now employers are buying in. According to a new study from PwC, 83 percent of employers believe the shift to remote work has been successful for their respective companies. 

Though the number of employees returning to the office is increasing with each passing week, the evidence suggests that many will continue working from home. In many cases, for example guest posting agencies, it is actually easier for employees to keep working from home, rather than return to the office.

Working from home used to be a little taboo, but the world has changed over the last year or so. It’s now considered normal (and even expected) to work from home. It's now easier than ever for companies to hire freelancers for all sorts of jobs, whether it's graphic design, accounting, or editing. And if you’re searching for a job, perhaps you should narrow your focus to remote positions. Blogger and influencer Charisse Yu has worked remotely for nearly a decade.She was an Emmy nominated reporter working for several networks prior to her role in blogging. She exchanged her mic for a spatula and now writes about food and mom related topics. Throughout the years she has gained 400,000 followers across social media. 

Yu’s job is a great example of how one can work successfully from the comfort of their own home. She was able to successfully do so and now during this time, she essentially homeschools her children and also manages her businesses remotely.

Here are a few of the benefits: 

  • Flexibility

While they’re often called “work-from-home positions,” nobody is telling you that you actually have to work out of your house. These remote positions provide tons of flexibility. Whether you want to work out of a coffee shop, go to the park, or spend a couple of weeks traveling the country, you have the flexibility to work from wherever you want. In Yu’s case, she is able to be a food blogger from her home, her studio or even at a restaurant. The advancement of technology has indeed made working outside of the office much easier. Sending off content happens with just a few clicks no matter where Yu is. 

  • Personalized Environment

There’s something nice about being in your own environment. You get to choose what you wear, where you sit, what your office looks like, what music plays in the background, how warm the house is, etc. Plus, with fewer distractions from noisy coworkers, you can be more productive with your time. That’s a win!

  • No Commuting

If you live in a busy urban or metro area, then working from home could save you hundreds of hours per year in time not commuting. Not only that, but you’ll lower your risk of being in an accident and enhance your overall safety. Research out of California has shown a 75 percent reduction in car accident rates in the last year– much of which has resulted from fewer people on the roads during rush hour.

  • More Time With Family

Working from home allows you to achieve the work-life balance that you’re seeking. It allows you to spend more time with family, including meaningful moments with your children in the mornings and evenings. These are moments that you can’t get back! “There’s a lot to be said about being able to work when everyone sleeps, and also get to spend time with your family,” Yu says. 

Finding Legitimate Work-From-Home Opportunities

The challenge, at least historically, has been finding legitimate work-from-home opportunities. If you run a quick Google search for remote jobs, you’ll be inundated with spammy sales positions and multi-level marketing schemes. However, there are plenty of genuine options. Consider these tips:

  • Ask your boss. If you’re currently employed in a position that you believe could be done remotely (at least partially), ask your boss. Many employers are looking for ways to cut overhead and could save a significant amount by allowing you to work remotely. You don’t know until you ask!
  • Ask your friends. Do you have friends or people in your network who work remotely? See if they have any advice or can put you in contact with any remote opportunities.
  • Try National Jobs. As always, run a search on National Jobs to see if there are any remote opportunities out there. You’d be surprised what kind of flexible positions are available. 
  • Consider these positions. There are certain positions where remote work is standard. Virtual assistants, transcriptionists, and tutors come to mind. By narrowing your search to positions where working from home is normal, you’ll find more opportunities. 

Don’t get so caught up in the desire to work from home that you pursue jobs you’re not interested in. Even more important than where you work is the fit. Look for opportunities that align with your vision and goals.
