Start off by carefully reading the roles and responsibilities of the job. The next step is to mold your job skills to these roles and responsibilities.

Tell the employer how you already accomplish these responsibilities in your current position. If you do not fulfill the same duties, detail how your existing experience is relevant. The goal is to show your prospective employer that you will be a quick study.

Use Buzzwords

While reviewing the job announcement, look for buzzwords that are commonly used. For example, you may see buzzwords like mentoring or business acumen.

You should tailor your resume to include any buzzwords. It is likely that the employer is looking for these buzzwords. They may disqualify any applicant that does not use them.

Prioritize Your Accomplishments

Resumes that focus too heavily on roles and responsibilities are often dry. The reviewers’ eyes start to gloss over when reading hundreds of the same tired format.

One way to make your resume stand out is by highlighting your accomplishments. Draw attention to the fact that you saved your company money or set a sales record.

Keep It Concise

Employers do not have time to read a novel for each employee. You may have a long and accomplished career.

However, you have to find a way to condense it into a reasonable size. Entry-level job applicants and recent college graduates should submit a one-page resume.

The one-page rule of thumb is applicable for those with limited job experience as well. This is plenty of space for your educational background and highlights of your job skills.

If you have more than 10 years of experience, it is acceptable to move onto a second page. With a decade-plus of experience, it is no longer realistic to confine your accomplishments and job skills to one page.

At the same time, employers do not want a bulletized list of every single thing you do. Instead, focus on the job skills that the employer is looking for and accomplishments that set you apart. The best resume writers are able to do more with less.
