Choosing the right career can feel overwhelming.

Unless you’re one of the lucky few who’ve known what you’re supposed to do since the third grade, you likely get a wave of anxiety whenever you’re asked what you’re going to do with your life.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, people stay at their jobs for an average of 4.1 years. That means a 25-year-old will change jobs 10 times before they are 65. Given that statistic, we know few life decisions will have a greater impact on happiness than job satisfaction.

Choosing a profession can be difficult because the workforce evolves. Jobs that once were solid choices can become superfluous, causing available positions to dwindle. To survive, job seekers often have to try out new careers, learn different skills and start all over again from the bottom.

There are many reasons to choose a career in digital marketing, and if you’re worried about job stability, take a closer look at this booming industry.

A Growing Field

Recently, LinkedIn listed digital marketers in their top ten list of most in-demand jobs. Looking ahead, it’s believed that there will be more places hiring people with digital marketing expertise than there will be employees to fill the positions. This gap means higher wages and more opportunities for job seekers.

According to theBureau of Labor Statistics, job demand in marketing has a projected growth of 6 percent through 2029. This translates to an additional 18.8K jobs each year.

Many organizations are already combining their traditional advertising practices with digital, and some are budgeting more for digital marketing and less for traditional. According to Statista.com, funds allocated for digital marketing have steadily grown since 2017, and this trend is expected to continue. Rather than increasing their advertising budget, most companies are reallocating resources from traditional marketing methods towards digital practices.

A Chance to Use Your Current Skill Set

Have an eye for design? Or perhaps you’re really good with words and can write stellar content. There are numerous skills in demand for digital marketing that, with some additional training, can be a valuable asset for brands looking to fill marketing roles.

If you love creating and editing video for example, companies are looking to do more video content so the demand is expected to be high in 2021 and beyond.

Job listings for TikTok content creators are already popping up, so if you enjoy engaging in the newest platforms, you can take that skill into your new career.

Ecommerce has a lot of roles for the creative individual including content writing, social media, product/UXs and numerous others. If you can combine your current skills with digital marketing, you’ll be an invaluable employee.

Taking some courses to brush up on trends or to add to your current skill set will get you where you need to go. But what if you’ve already finished college? Do you have to go back and start all over again? While you can absolutely go back to school, there’s so much you can teach yourself including online certifications and tutorial programs.

LinkedIn offers Google Analytics training and other tutorials. Udemy is also a superb resource for learning new skills, including free tutorials like this one that focuses on SEO.

Competitive Pay

The average base salary for a digital marketer is $58,185, according to Indeed.com. A mid-level professional makes $85,541-$122,279 on average and a vice president makes $146,203, according to Glassdoor.

Of course, your salary depends on your level of expertise. The more you can do, the more you’re worth. If you’re the kind of person who always wants to be learning and increasing your skill level, you’re particularly well-suited for a career in digital marketing.

Not only is the pay competitive, numerous companies are open to remote employees since the work is all online, allowing for flexible work arrangements. The possibility of a high-level salary combined with living wherever you choose is a substantial perk of the industry.

An Evolving Career

As new platforms emerge and technology expands, more opportunities are opening up for job seekers in digital marketing, which allows for the chance to learn new marketing methods.

People tend to leave their jobs about halfway through their careers to try their hand at something new. This is often because they feel they’ve gone as far as they can go, or are burned out doing the same thing over and over again.

With digital marketing, there aren’t the limits and stagnation you might find in other professions. The field is alive and offers fresh opportunities to try up and coming technologies, learn new skills and use the latest tools as they are constantly introduced. A large part of online marketing requires creative thinking and coming up with new, creative ideas to use for their digital content.

To get creative ideas going more companies are offering experiences to their employees and using those experiences as a way of helping their employees grow in their roles. Colby Bauer, CEO of Thread Wallets, said, “We work hard, via training, time and resources, to pull potential out of new employees to make sure they are fulfilled in their roles. Our goal is to make people say, ‘I love working here.’”

Colby further states, “We take a similar process to what Disney did when filming the movie Ratatouille. Individuals that worked on the movie Ratatouille actually went to France and ate at fancy restaurants to understand what it was like to get more invested into making the movie.

At Thread, we’ve taken a similar approach and have employees attend events, go to skate competitions, take trips and more so they are invested in the brand. This obviously can get expensive but it gets team members excited in their role.”

As businesses evolve and expand their online presence, companies will need more people with digital marketing skills. With competitive wages, job security and new opportunities, you’re sure to find your place in this vibrant industry.
