However, when you're involved in an accident at work that leads to an injury, you'll probably be entitled to workers' compensation benefits. As it were, almost every employer is required by state law to provide workers compensation insurance coverage for its workers.

1. Injured at Work 101: Consult a Doctor

The first step you should take after being in an accident at work is going to see a doctor as soon as possible. 

The best-case scenario would be going to see a workers compensation doctor. They're doctors that are specialized in treating work-related injuries and they'll be able to set you on the right path with all the required documents and reports.

Of course, if you got severe injuries then going to an emergency room is the first order of business. Afterward, you can set up your own appointment with the doctor of your choosing.

2. File an Accident Report

Right after getting your injuries checked, you'll need to file an accident report. 

Unfortunately, you'll find that many states have rather tight deadlines by which you must report an accident if you want it to be covered under workers' compensation laws. 

Make sure to indicate whether or not you believe you've been injured and put in as much detail as you can into the report. The great thing about filing an incident report is that it immediately protects you. It'll protect your rights in case you don't experience any symptoms of an insidious injury even months after the accident.

3. Report Injuries as Soon as Possible

After you've seen a doctor and filed an accident report, you'll have to report that you've been injured to your employer as soon as possible. 

Currently, it's completely up to your employer to file a workers' compensation claim with their insurance company on your behalf. They won't be able to file that claim without knowing that you've been injured in the first place.

Moreover, you might have reported the accident but didn't know that you were injured at the time. It happens. In this case, make sure to let your employer know as soon as possible, and follow up to confirm that a workers' compensation claim has been filed.

You're entitled to a copy of the workers' compensation claim that's filed by your employer, so make sure to grab it for your own records.
