One of the major drivers of employee performance is their work environment.

No matter the size of your business, you want to hire talented and ambitious workers. But unhappy workers can seriously affect your company. Bad management and unfriendly co-workers can kill any motivation.

You want your work environment to be productive, but any kind of negativity won't look good on your employee retention. Improving your work environment goes hand-in-hand with employee retention and engagement.

1. Hire Great Team Members and Get Rid of Bad Ones

If you're a great business owner, you know your team is everything. Without awesome employees, your enterprise is nothing. You try and do everything for your workers, but there will inevitably be bad eggs.

How do you identify bad employees? This isn't always easy --you're busy handling your duties and may not notice their behavior.

Some employees may harass other employees. Maybe the employee you promoted is now treating other employees unfairly. And some workers just have a bad attitude.

Educate your employees on teamwork and professionalism. If you suspect anything or receive employee complaints, handle the situation.

You should also reward employees who perform exceptionally.

If you hire a worker who works overtime, puts everything into their work and only turns in great-quality assignments, they're all-star employees. Use them as an example when you hire.

2. Improve Your Lighting

You may think this is weird advice, but it works. Great lighting helps improve productivity and employee attitudes.

Think about it: we all need the sun, and our mind is attracted to the light. This is why bright lights and natural lights impact energy and focus.

When the room is dark, your employees will feel more lethargic. Dark lighting sets off signs to your brain, telling you it's time for bed. Your employees will feel lazy and unmotivated because they can only think about sleeping.

If your office is filled with windows, open them up. Let the sunshine seep into your office. Natural lighting is one of the best types of lighting, for multiple reasons.

But if there aren't many windows, a few extra lamps will do the trick. Different bulbs, such as blue-enriched bulbs, will also make a difference.

Are there any specific rooms you should light up? The whole office should be bright. But certain rooms that are used for important purposes, such as conference rooms, need the best lighting.

3. Be Comfortable

How often have you heard your employees complain about back pain or carpal tunnel? Slouching at a desk is a first-class ticket to long-term pain. But maybe your office furniture is making your employees uncomfortable?

When you pick out office furniture, put emphasis on comfort over style. Yeah, trendy furniture may look great, but style doesn't guarantee comfort.

Not all employees enjoy sitting. Offer standing desk options and have gym equipment available if your employees want to sweat it out on their break. Let your employees take walks if they feel any cabin fever.

Many employers now offer more flexibility so employees can choose their workplace.

If remote work isn't an option, spice up the office with couches and bean bags. Step out of the cubicle office layout -- let your employees work where they're comfortable.

Comfort isn't only physical comfort.

Your employees likely need certain technological gear and other products to perform their job. Do your research and discuss different product options with your employees.

If you need to buy an expensive computer or certain programs, it will be worth it.

4. Always Use Good Communication Skills

Never forget -- you could be the reason the workplace is unhappy. As a business owner, your job can be stressful. Sometimes you may not notice if you bad-tempered or even take out a bad day on your employees.

Try and be mindful of how you communicate with your employees. If you see any issues with the way you treat your employees, work on fixing them.

Open yourself up to advice, concerns, or tips from your employees. When performing employee reviews, always offer positive reinforcement as well as ways they can improve.

Try to involve your staff in decision-making. If your company is changing or there's a major project, ask your employees their thoughts and opinions.

And last but not least, always reward your employees for their hard work. This helps your employees feel valued and they will strive to continue producing great work.

If your employees think their work is underappreciated, they may not feel motivated to work harder.

At the same time, don't practice favoritism. Encourage all of your employees to perform well and reward all great work.

5. Create a Healthy Workspace

More companies are understanding how crucial health is to the workplace. A large group of people are in a small space, so it's easy to ingest bacteria and other hazards.

Try and be as clean as possible. Always have hand sanitizer and cleansing wipes.
